On September 23, 2009, in the impoverished community of Bolosse in Port au Prince, you were part of delivering the Book of Hope to the 600 millionth child in the world to receive it!

Ruth Sara Monteau received the 600 millionth book, at her school, College Evangelique Maranatha. It’s a mission school for the neighborhood’s destitute children.

It’s an amazing beacon of light in the darkness of the very poor, very tough neighborhood where Ruth Sara lives.

Bolosse is a violent community with lots of gang activity that has boiled into open gang warfare in recent years — homes have burned, people have been kidnapped ... the area’s concrete block slums are built into the hillsides and teem with people who are desperate, hungry and hopeless.

People crowd the streets, trying to sell whatever they can. The streets are ramshackle and filled with garbage, sewage, pigs and chickens.

In the middle of this is an oasis of peace and transformation. On a hillside, walled off and full of vegetation, is a Baptist seminary and Ruth Sara’s school. When the gangs were at war a few years ago, many people in the community sought refuge here.

It is truly a place that brings transformation to the area, but it wasn’t always that way.

The problem here, as in many places across Haiti, is spiritual warfare, empowered by widespread voodoo worship.

Three years ago at Ruth Sara’s school, an evil demonic spirit began to possess the children at school. For nearly two months, each day a different child would become demon possessed and begin to curse and speak evil and violence — the demon declared it would kill and spill the blood of all the children.

As this continued, confusion and chaos reigned! The local news began to cover the aberrations ... and spiritual warfare raged within. Thankfully, local believers banded together to fast and pray, and because of God’s miraculous power, the incidents ceased.
