poko

A child — a family — a village — transformed!

Poko’s father was king of the village!

The ruler had died — his son wasn’t there to accede to the throne … and Poko’s father was appointed.

But this great honor for Poko and her family caused strife in this rural village of Togo — the two tribes who livedthere began to squabble — Poko’s tribe against the other tribe.

Poko’s father had to defend his rule and fight for his people every step of the way. He asked the ancient tribal gods for power to prevail, sacrificed goats and chickens to them, prayed to their idols.

But then Poko saw The GodMan film, learned about salvation through faith in Christ and chose to dedicate her life to the Lord.

And she shared her new faith with her family. Her father came to church with her … chose to follow Jesus … and brought all his idols back to be burned by the pastor.

But that wasn’t all — Poko’s father went to the other village chief and said he wasn’t going to be king anymore, and his people wouldn’t be fighting with their neighbors anymore. From now on, they would practice the peaceful way of Jesus.

Today, Poko says there’s peace in her family and peace in their village, as many others have also chosen to follow Christ, and all are attending church together!

Shining the light in the darkness of Islam
Children in “sensitive” regions of Africa receive the Good News

The Lumière Project is for all of French-speaking Africa — including eight nations where Islam is the majority religion …and in many of these nations, there is strong opposition to the Gospel and churchplanting.

A particular city, in a “sensitive” nation, was once home to a renowned Islamic holy man. This “evangelist” for Islam was said to have spread Mohammed’s teachings across this nation and in neighboring countries as well.

The city is even named for a prophecy he made there, predicting a “bubbling over” of Muslim devotion. The entire town is proud of its Muslim roots … and opposed to Christianity. A well-known motto there is “Never a Church to Defile the Holy City.” They have driven away missionaries for 30 years!

But 60% of the city’s residents are children … and our church partners were determined to get the Word of God to them no matter what the cost.

  • They met with the director of schools who gave them permission to distribute the Book of Hope.
  •  They organized community healthcare clinics for the poor.
  •  And they had an on-site prayer team, praying for the entire outreach.

Although the road is difficult, already there are some new believers, and a pastor has been appointed to shepherd them, with plans to add another pastor as more children, youth and families come to Christ.

Please keep these efforts in your prayers, and our teams as they shine the light of God’s Word into the darkness of Islam. The work is dangerous, but our partners are dedicated.

My heart for Francophone Africa

My heart for Francophone Africa
by President Rob Hoskins

Before God called me to OneHope, my plan for my life was to minister to Muslims in French-speaking Africa. I grew up in France and speak the language — and as a child I lived in theMiddle East and still have a heart for Muslims.

The Lord called me to something bigger, to reach children and youth in every nation … but my heart remains linked to the French-speaking people of Africa, which is one reason I love The Lumière Project so much.

We’re using specific resources that communicate God’s power to children and youth in Francophone Africa, focusing on…

1. The GodMan film — which portrays the life of Christ for children who can read and those who can’t.
2. The Children’s Animated Edition Book of Hope, a companion to the film and a stand-alone Gospel presentation for elementary-aged children.
3. God’s Big Story, the series of illustrated cards that help children learn the major stories of the Bible and receive the Gospel message.

These Scripture engagement programs are perfectly suited to make an impact in Frenchspeaking Africa, which is a strategic area for evangelism because it lies along the “fault lines” between Islam in northern Africa and Christianity in the south —

These nations form a “hot zone” across Africa where violence, war, and attacks on Christians can take place due to the heated clash between the two religions. Many of our partners face persecution and the threat of jihadi violence, yet they are willing to take the risk.

Thank you for praying and standing with your African partners to bring the hope of Jesus Christ to this critical region.

God's light for French-speaking Africa:
The Lumière Project is transforming lives

Reaching children with the Gospel and planting new churches in Francophone Africa

Young lives are being transformed by the power of God’s Word in French-speaking Africa!

It’s happening through The Lumière Project, a six-year plan to reach 6.9 million children and youth throughout the region — AND help our partners plant 3,324 new churches.

Forty-nine denominations have joined together to share the Good News with the next generation. They are using The GodMan film to ignite evangelism efforts — along with distributions of the Book of Hope and God’s Big Story Clubs to engage the children and youth — in 10 French-speaking African nations.

This region is the birthplace of the Voodoo religion, and spiritism is still strong — plus eight of the ten nations are a critical battleground between Islam and Christianity. Four of these countries are over 50% Muslim.

Our partners face persecution and violent opposition, but they are dedicated to reaching the next generation and launching churches where the new
believers can be discipled. God is blessing their efforts!

From 2015 until now, already 1,383 new churches have been planted!

Please keep praying for The Lumière Project. As this Global Report illustrates, it is making a big impact.

New life in Christ for a boy in need!

Young William had long been part of “The Celestial Church of Christ” — but as grand as it sounds … it has little to do with Jesus.

It’s a cult based in Africa — with a strong following in Benin, William’s home nation. The practitioners call
themselves “Celestials,” but their practice of religion is more like Islam than Christianity:

Churches always face east; men and women are divided for worship services; all are forbidden to eat
pork; women must be purified after menstruation or child birth … other strict rules govern the lives of the
cultists …

So despite being part of the Celestial Church of Christ, William knew nothing about Jesus — until he received the Book of Hope and began to understand who Jesus really is.

Today, William is attending his local church and following Christ as His Savior!

Witchcraft, Voodoo, spiritism — defeating the darkness by power of God’s Word

The village had been enslaved to witchcraft of every kind — Voodoo and demonism that demanded sacrifices of goats and chickens —

While this “sensitive” region is heavily influenced by Islam, in this particular village — the darkness came from the worship of evil spirits.

But then The Lumière Project teams arrived with God’s Word for the children and youth, along with a showing of The GodMan film for the whole village.

The chief himself chose to dedicate his life to Christ — many villagers followed his lead — and he has donated the land for a new church!

They’re already meeting in the new church planted after a showing of The GodMan film. Praise the Lord! His Word is dispelling the darkness!

For the first time in six years — Charitable Gift Annuity interest rates have increased … which means:
Greater lifetime income for you

If you’ve been considering a significant gift to help reach children around the world with God’s Word — now is the time.

When you establish a Charitable Gift Annuity with a tax-deductible gift of $5,000 or more, you can support the ministry of OneHope for years to come AND generate a lifetime income for yourself: the gift is invested to help share God’s Word with the children, and you receive a regular payout from the interest.

And right now, for the first time since 2012, these interest rates have increased — which means a greater income (not subject to stock market fluctuations) for you, at the same time you are sharing God’s Word with the next generation.

The chart shows you what the interest rates are, based on your age when you establish the annuity.

NATION BY NATION

SENSITIVE REGION

His mother expected him to help out around the house — but Narabar spent his time and money drinking the local rice-brewed liquor.

At 16, he didn’t realize that he was becoming an alcoholic; the drinking seemed to be the only thing that dulled his pain. But when he couldn’t get money to buy it, he tried to bully it out of his mother — or he might be reduced to stealing.

But then he received the Book of Hope and learned about Jesus Christ who loved him, no matter what he had done. The thought of an all-knowing God who loved and forgave him was so welcome to Narabar, he chose to follow Christ as his Savior!

He was delivered from drinking and is now reconciled to his mother, too.

BENIN

BENIN

Her papa was a fetish priest of Voodoo, but his bondage to demons made their home chaotic and made little Adonice hopeless. But then she saw The GodMan film and discovered the truth about Jesus’ power over demons and disease. Today, Adonice is following Christ as her Savior, and she has peace in her heart.

VENEZUELA

Ana was giving her parents a lot of trouble. She was quarrelsome, disrespectful, full of venom … But when she met Jesus through a OneHope showing of The GodMan film, she found in Him a best friend who loved and understood her … and this changed everything! Today, she follows Christ as her Savior, and her life has been transformed.

MADAGASCAR

Gibelle didn’t like to go to church, but she knew it was important to pray, so she prayed every morning … then immediately forgot about God until the next day. But when she received the Book of Hope and read the life story of Jesus, she began to realize how much He loved her — and she wanted to love Him, too! Today, she’s faithfully attending church and growing in her walk with God.

GOD’S WORD. EVERY CHILD.
Despite persecution from his own parents — he is still determined to follow Jesus

He was 15 — the time when many parents expect some sort of rebellion from their children. But Abdoulaye’s parents never expected this: He became a Christian!

Abdoulaye lives in one of the majority Muslim regions of French-speaking Africa where there is fierce opposition to the Gospel.

Nevertheless, as part of The Lumière Project, a team from our partner church risked persecution to share the Gospel with the children and young people in his village. They showed The GodMan film —

“I went, like many young people of my age. When I saw how Jesus loved me, I understood that what I had heard so far from Islam was not true,” Abdoulaye says.

“I cried a lot and decided to accept Jesus as a friend. Since then I am happy, and my life has changed.”

Abdoulaye’s new church family embraced him and gave him his own Bible.

But when he tried to share the Good News with his family, the reaction was frightening! His father beat him and took away his Bible. He was told he would follow Islam and not Jesus.

But Abdoulaye refuses to give up his new faith in Christ, no matter what the consequences.

Today, he follows Jesus in secret. His church got him another Bible, which he keeps hidden. Although he may have to hide his faith for now, we know God’s light will continue to shine in and through him.

Please pray for him and all children and youth in Muslim lands who so desperately need the light of Jesus Christ!
