Explore the Beliefs and Behaviors of American Teens

The United States Report

We wanted to know how growing up in the United States, experiencing the digital age, and gaining exposure to a multitude of foreign cultures has affected today’s teens and what it’s doing to their faith journey.

This report compiles survey responses from 410 teens across the United States.

Personas

There’s a lot of research out there on Gen Z, but our Global Youth Culture research showed how truly diverse this generation is. They are more ethnically diverse, more ideologically diverse, and more willing to be fluid in their beliefs and identity.

As we seek to minister to today’s teens, we must understand not just generational hallmarks, but the distinct characteristics of individuals and groups within Gen Z. We must be willing to understand them deeply, meet them where they are, and engage them in thoughtful dialogue and authentic relationships. We had deeper conversations with 94 teens to find out where they stand and the influences that have shaped them.

Mental Health Resources

When reviewing the data, it became overwhelmingly clear that today’s teens need help. Our research found that when asked about their experiences in the last three months, 60% of U.S. teens reported experiencing depression; 66% reported high anxiety; 75% reported feelings of loneliness, and 35% reported having had suicidal thoughts.

This generation needs support.  We can all help lessen the stigma around mental health by engaging in helpful conversations. But it can be difficult to know where to start, or how to move forward if you notice concerning trends or behaviors from the ones you love. A licensed therapist has contributed to this guide on how to recognize if a teen may be struggling with their mental health and how to take action. Download Crisis Mode today.
