When soccer opened hearts in a conflict zone

In a Central Asian nation still healing from historic conflict with a neighboring nation that’s predominantly Christian, four young men represent everything that should make the Gospel impossible to reach them.

They’re part of a radical Islamist movement. Their country now backs another Islamic nation in ongoing regional tensions. They’ve grown up viewing Christianity as the faith of their former enemies.

But they share something with young people everywhere: a passion for soccer.

When thousands of copies of Champions Book of Hope were distributed in their region, they found Champions speaks their language — celebrating teamwork, fair play, and athletic excellence while weaving in stories of soccer players who follow Jesus and Christ’s complete life story.

They read it. Then they showed up at the local church.

Their first meeting with the pastor was contentious and argumentative. But they were warmly welcomed and invited back. The second visit was different. They came with thoughtful questions that revealed careful attention to what they’d read. They wanted to understand more about Jesus.

Now they’ve committed to attending church services.

It’s not complete transformation — yet. But it’s a breakthrough that seemed impossible just months ago, made possible by God’s Word presented in a way that captured their hearts. Thank you for sending God’s Word to show them the way to new life in Christ!

You’re reaching the next generation with God’s Word!

Thanks for your monthly commitment as part of OneMission! You’re telling so many children and youth about Jesus every single month of the year — and we appreciate you!
